Key Stage 1
Key Stage One - Year 1 (5-6 years)
  Year 2 (6-7 years)

Key stage one consists of two groups year 1 and year 2. Our aim is to provide a safe, secure and stimulating environment that encourages children to become confident in their own abilities. Building on each child's individual experiences, the Key Stage One curriculum introduces a more structured approach to learning. The main focus of the British curriculum is to develop Literacy and Numeracy skills. Other curriculum areas that are covered are science, history, geography, Thai Language, ICT, D.T, art, music, R.E and P.E. The majority of these curriculum areas are taught using a thematic approach. For Year 1and Year 2 the children will cover 4 themes:

  1. An agreed whole school theme - this year we have chosen the Olympics
  2. A science based theme
  3. A geography based theme
  4. A history based theme.

We aim to bring these themes 'alive' by providing class trips, which makes learning more meaningful and interactive.

The children in Key Stage one learn phonics for 20 minutes every day following the Jolly Phonics program and the guidance set out by the new Letters and Sounds framework. Literacy and Numeracy are taught using the New Primary Framework. For more information please see www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primaryframework

Children in Key Stage one will follow the Greenwich Scheme of work for ICT which also supports the QCA units of work. Just some of the units the children in Year 1 will cover are 'Using a wordbank', 'Information around us' and 'Representing images graphically: Pictograms'. In Year 2 children will cover units such as 'Finding information' 'Routes: controlling a floor turtle' and 'creating pictures'.

Communication

The children in Key Stage one are provided with contact books, which aims to encourage children's involvement in their learning. Children are encouraged to come up with their own targets or think of something they would particularly like to learn about or get better at! Teachers provide daily guidance and support in order for the children to reach their targets and provide weekly feedback to parents. The children will also have reading records and we encourage all parents to sign the record and make comments when needed.

Homework is sent home three times a week. On Monday we set Numeracy, on Wednesday Thai and on Friday Literacy. At least twice a term children are encouraged to complete a theme based piece of homework, which may include various kinds of research Each child is provided with a homework diary which encourages both teachers and parents to comment on how the child coped with the homework. Children are also given reading books and spellings to complete throughout the week. Please see our homework policy for any further information.

Your concerns are our concerns. Please, do not hesitate to contact school if you have any queries whatsoever!
